POTTY BREAKING

Tips for house/pad breaking your new furbaby

When you bring your baby home, the first thing to remember is that their mom has already started them on house breaking. While in the "nest" when the pup eliminated , Mom would "clean it up". When the pup was old enough to walk, she would push the pup out of the "nest" , wait for them to eliminae, then lick and nuzzle them giving praise.

So... now is your turn! There are 2 main points to remember.... first: Your pup is in a new home, things smell different and their surroundings are very scary. Second: They are looking to YOU for help and training.

When house breaking and/or pad training you MUST follow a rigid routine. Dogs in general are very ridgid ( eat, potty, sleep & play) at the same time every day.

If your pup has an accident, and YOU DO NOT CATCH THEM in the act.... it is very important to NOT say anything, put the pup out of sight (so as not to be able to see you clean the mess up). When the pup SEES you cleaning the mess, their brain reverts back to being with MOM and will think it is ok.

IF YOU CATCH THEM.... stomp your foot, clap your hands ( DO NOT YELL) , to startle them... WALK the pup to their "area" and allow them to GO there. If nothing happends, place them in crate or small room for 3 minutes.... then try again. When they "GO" praise like they just saved the world!!!

Remember if you are PAD breaking... you will need 2 pads about 1-2 feet apart. ( Pups will urinate on one and Defecate on the other). Watch a dog who is outside... they will not do both in the same area!

Below is a schedule that you can use when your home all day... if you work outside the home, then follow the times ( fit them to your oun schedule) , when you leave for work place the pup in a small room or better yet a crate( Make sure crate has enough room for pup to turn around and lay down). If you will be gone for more than 4-6 hrs ( with a pup under 6 months of age) make sure you place water and toys to keep them entertained. It would be best to have a friend or family member go and "let the pup out" after 4 hrs if possible. A pup under 6 months will not beable to "hold it" for over 4-6 hrs.
