KELDEN's K9 BEHAVIOR

What YOU will need for the new baby

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

1. NIP NIPPING IN THE BUD

Nipping is the forerunner of biting if it is allowed to go unchecked. When he/she nips, try a firm "BAH”. If this does not stop him/her, grasp his/her collar by slipping your hand under it OR snap on a leash and jerk them from side to side, ( this is how his/her mom ,with her mouth on his neck, would have corrected him/her), repeating your angry "BAH". If he/she continues to nip, march them to the crate and leave them there to cool off. The message is: I won't play with you if you bite.

2. BE SMART...USE A LEASH

The leash is your training tool and should be respected by your dog. So never let them chew or tug on it.

3. NEWSPAPERS ARE FOR READING

Never hit your dog with a newspaper. A cylindrical object swinging towards a dog is much more likely to increase aggression than to prevent it. A leash correction is the best!

4. TEACH YOUR DOG THE COMMAND "ENOUGH"

BAH means: What you are doing is wrong and you must stop and never do it again. ENOUGH means: What you are doing is OK, but for now I want you to stop. Too complicated for a dog? Hardly! Most learn by tone of voice. Use BAH for nipping, biting, growling. Use ENOUGH for wildness, excessive barking, roughness; it is an excellent tool in biting prevention.

5. DON'T PLAY ROUGH, PLAY ACTIVE

Behind almost every biting dog is a well-meaning parent who roughhouses with that dog!

Play active, toss a ball for your dog to retrieve, jog, race, bike your dog, teach him Frisbee, toss a stick. NEVER EVER let your dog tug on clothes, bite on your arm, bite your arm wrapped in a towel, pull or tug on a towel or rope. NEVER EVER let your dog pull or bite on his leash. Don't swing your arms in his face. Wouldn’t this kind of teasing Make You want to bite?

6. TEACH HIM / HER OBEDIENCE

Every dog loves to learn and by teaching him/her basic obedience, not only will the rewards of a well behaved dog be there, but in turn he/she will also become very proud and feel good about their new life!

LAST: REMEMBER; ALWAYS GIVE YOUR BEST FRIEND A KISS FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AND LAST THING AT NIGHT! YOU BOTH WILL FEEL BETTER FOR IT!!
