LOREN's Story

You will first need a little history about us to appreciate the beauty of this story. We are a couple in our late thirties married happily for 14 years. Within our first four years we decided to start our family, only to discover we needed the help of a fertility doctor. Two years past and in 1996, we had an early miscarriage, we weren’t sure of the sex , but named our baby anyway, Addie. The next year we suffered an even more tragic loss. Our son, Nealy was born in my fifth month and lived only ten minutes. I was in labor 11 days with him and due to this and other complications during his birth, I had to have a complete hysterectomy by age 30. Years went by and we were empty, we didn’t want to adopt for private reasons.

There are a lot of details left out, because we almost have a book of history! In 2002 we adopted the first of three Chihuahuas. Asha is 5, Affie is 4, and Lizzie is 3. They are all girls and very spoiled. I could write a chapter on each one! They go on vacations with us and are very loved, we thought we had our “little family” completed. Little did we know our lives were about to change once again.

In July of this year, a man my husband works with, Miniature Pinscher had puppies. We decided to adopt one, the first 4 weeks we thought she was a girl, but no, he’s a boy. We didn’t care, we had visited him every week and he was already in our hearts, so we brought him home at 6 weeks. We thought we knew how to raise a puppy and in fact we do, but not a Min-Pin! Loren had a mind of his own and although very sweet, he was going to take over.

I did an Internet search for obedience training and that is how we found Keldon’s and let me say, we‘re so glad! I called Kelley, and made arrangements for Loren to start the basics, I also ask about service dog training. I am an asthmatic diabetic with neuropathy in my back and legs. We had done some research on the Min-Pin breed and found out they are excellent service dogs. After some of our basics training, Kelley suggested to us to go ahead into our service training. I had mentioned the connection between Loren and me and told Kelley about the loss of our children. She immediately suggested that we focus on Loren’s training for emotional support. I had no idea such a thing existed, Kelley told me that there are all types of services that animals provide. It’s great, Loren and I have a bond that is nothing short of mother and child. He loves my husband and the girls too, but he is clearly my dog. He has also picked on my blood sugar being too high, as well as me being on my feet too long in the mall. We are so blessed to have found Kelley, we would have never known about this training. Stay tuned for pictures and updates!

Today I was on the front porch taking some of the Christmas down. I felt it coming, but I knew I had a little time to get in. Loren thought different, he started barking and crying at me through the study window, it overlooks the front porch. I came on in and checked it first, my blood sugar was 65! Y'all, he knew it and I was outside! He laid so still beside me while I had some peanut butter & crackers. I'm here and witnessing it, living it, but it still amazes me how he knows! If y'all want to add this to Loren's page, go right ahead!!
